Haiti asks for OAS help for elections

Despite not being on the official agenda of the 46th OAS General Assembly, the current political situation in Haiti has been one of the topics for debate by the attending foreign ministers.

As reported in Diario Libre, the proposal for a repeat of the presidential election on 9 October was raised on the floor. Reportedly, US Secretary of State Kerry and Canada’s foreign minister Stephane Dion expressed their concerns at the delays in calling the new election. Dion stated that Haiti and the Haitian community in Canada are anxious about the lack of operation of the political institutions in Haiti. Foreign Minister of Haiti Pierrot Delienne asked attendees to provide the necessary support for holding the election that has already been postponed three times. “We are asking for each and every one’s involvement, for the OAS to help us once again to carry out the elections,” said Dielienne. In last year’s vote, Jovenel Moise of the Tet Kale party, who had the support of the previous government, is reported to have received the majority of the votes, followed by Jude Celestin, and Moise Jean-Charles in third place.
