Members of Civil Defense and the National District Fire Brigade rescued a woman who threw herself into the Caribbean Sea on the morning of Tuesday 14 June 2016 in what was said to be a suicide attempt. She died shortly after the rescue. According to witnesses, 28-year old architect Raquel Reyes Perez jumped into the sea from the Autopista 30 de Mayo (western end of the Malecon) in Santo Domingo, in front of Casa Espana at around 7:15am.
Her husband, 39-year old engineer Engel Garcia jumped in after her to try and rescue her but drowned and the emergency responders were only able to recover his body.
The woman was said to be suffering from post-partum depression.
Reyes and Garcia, who had been married for 10 years, leave two children, a five year old and a six-month old baby.
