Inmates escaped from La Victoria

An inmate at the La Victoria jail feigned illness and together with a fellow inmate called the guard on shift for help, but it was a trick and both managed to escape from the jail.

According to a source, the prison guard opened the cell to take the inmate to the prison hospital. However, as soon as he opened the cell door, both men held him hostage, as he was alone at the time, stole his firearm and one of them fled.

The other stayed with the guard, holding him at gunpoint and he too managed to escape.

This happened at 7pm on Monday night, 13 June 2016 and so far it is not known if any other inmates escaped as well.

Following the event, security in the jail was stepped up and several more armed law enforcement agents have been monitoring the area and residents near the jail were instructed to stay indoors.

Local police set up roadblocks around the jail checking each vehicle that left.

At 10pm it was announced that a head count was being carried out in the jail of the more than 8,000 inmates to see who had escaped. The names of the escaped inmates have not yet been released.
