Agents from the Naval Intelligence Division of the Dominican Republic Armada (Navy) intercepted an illegal boat trip to Puerto Rico when they arrested five people on Sabana de Nisibon beach, in the eastern province of La Altagracia (Higuey). All of the men were arrested by a naval patrol before boarding a boat that was bound for Puerto Rico. The naval officers also confiscated an outboard engine and several plastic bags containing personal items. The five were taken to Naval Intelligence central headquarters in Santo Domingo, where they will be questioned about the alleged illegal trip. The Armada’s public relations office says that illegal crossings to Puerto Rico have reduced drastically in the last few months, since the implementation of strict measures along the coastline, especially on the east coast of the Dominican Republic. The Armada also issued a call to citizens, warning them not to be fooled by illegal trip organizers and promoters, since besides being tricked out of large sums of money they would also be risking their lives at sea, as reported in Diario Libre.
