Dominican Week in the USA

A delegation of 50 businesspersons and government officials is attending the 24th Dominican Week event that opened on Monday, 20 June 2016 at the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington. The visiting delegation raised the flag at ambassador Jose Tomas Perez’s residence. The event was founded by late lawyer Luis Heredia Bonetti and is still being organized by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham). The event is aimed at strengthening ties between the US and the DR and promoting the country’s image as the leading US trading partner in the Caribbean. AmCham president Gustavo Tavares and organizing committee chairman Roberto Herrera gave the keynote speeches. Ambassador Perez highlighted the main points on the US-DR bilateral agenda. Perez said that DR-CAFTA, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, was a great challenge for Dominican business to be competitive in international markets.

Speaking for the DR, Herrera said the impact of DR-CAFTA has not met local expectations, but trusted that as the economy becomes more competitive, the benefits of the strategy will be seen.

The mission is holding meetings with the US Chamber of Commerce, US Congress, the National Supermarket Association in New York and United Nations. Meetings are also scheduled to analyze the new relationship between the US and Cuba and what effects can be expected for the Dominican Republic.
