Police chief Major General Nelson Peguero Paredes has told editors of leading Dominican media publications that the force has made savings of RD$50 million a month by clamping down on the practice among the higher ranks of distributing gasoline vouchers to outsiders. Likewise, non-police vehicles are no longer being allowed to fill up at police fuel pumps. He said the savings were being made without affecting the fuel available for patrols. The Police chief said that around RD$1.2 billion in savings are also being made, which will be used to increase wages for working policemen. A police colonel can now be paid RD$60,000 a month.
