An appeal by the president of the UNATRAFIN transport association, Arsenio Quevedo, who is accused of contract killings, criminal association and money laundering, has once again been delayed.
Quevedo was appealing for his bail terms to be amended and the case will now be heard on 30 June when the victims and families of victims have been asked to attend.
According to the authorities, Quevedo is the mastermind and financier behind a network of hit men while Pedro Brand town councilor, Erickson de los Santos, accused along with him, is alleged to be in charge of supervising and organizing the activities, carrying out the murders, attempted kidnapping and other types of organized crime.
Speaking on the “Enfoque Matinal” program, National District Prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso criticized senator Adriano Sanchez Roa, two deputies and other officials from Elias Pina province for offering to act as guarantors for Quevedo’s release, saying they did not even have the courtesy to ask her for the charge sheet to see what the case against him was before offering to guarantee his bail, and that they should only have made the offer if they thought there was no case against him. She also revealed that an international delegation had asked how it was possible that a Senator of the Republic could support a person accused of being a hit man.
As reported, the deputies signing as guarantors were Francisco Bautista (PLD) and Luis Castillo (PRD), senator Adriano Sanchez Roa (PRSC) for Elias Pina and mayor Fernando Cubilete.
Reynoso said that the Court of Appeals would be hearing the case.
As reported in Diario Libre, Reynoso said that the councilor had a gas station where the fuel was sold. She had also interviewed dozens of transporters about the tax-exempt fuel who told her they did not receive any. “Who benefited, what happened to that fuel that is paid for with taxpayer money?” she asked. Reynoso said that some of the documents in Arsenio Quevedo’s arraignment would prove that journalists and police agents were on the Unatrafin payroll.
