The mayor of San Cristobal, former baseball star Raul Mondesi was interviewed by the Specialized Prosecution Service for Administrative Corruption (PEPCA) on Tuesday, 21 June 2016 in connection with alleged irregularities committed during his period of administration.
On his arrival at the interrogation, Mondesi announced to journalists that he had more than 4,000 tareas (621 acres) of land in San Cristobal so he did not need to be Mayor and that he had brought a series of documents as proof of ownership to show during the interview.
Mondesi added he had no idea as to what had happened during the process against him and other municipal employees who are accused of the misuse of around RD$300 million.
He is being accused along with Secretary General Bienvenido Araujo Japa, municipal treasurer Antonio de Jesus Ferreira Guzman, finance officer Pedro Cordero Valverde, and Edward Vianelo Pontier, who is also employed at the town hall.
When Mondesi left the interview with PEPCA, he was surprised to discover that his 2016 Toyota Lexus had disappeared from outside the office. At first he thought it had been towed away by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) but in fact the company that sold it to him, Cesar Motors, had repossessed it.
Mondesi was visibly annoyed that he, along with his son and bodyguard would have to try and get a ride to get back to San Cristobal.
