President Danilo Medina has attended the inauguration ceremony of a new textile factory, at the site of the former Quisqueya sugar mill in southeastern San Pedro de Macoris. The project came about after President Medina made one of his “surprise visits” to the mill and committed to helping the wives of the employees of the closed sugar mill. The women received training and are now manufacturing sheets, pillowcases, backpacks, mosquito nets, uniforms and other clothing to be sold locally with potential for exports. The factory is being managed by a women’s association and is based in a large industrial building with office and training areas.
The facilities include 92 sewing machines, cutting tables, ironing area, and shelving for raw material and finished products, in addition to administrative offices and training center at the new factory, according to Fernando Rosa, the head of the Fund of the Reformed Companies (FOMPER).
