President Medina in Panama for canal expansion opening

President Danilo Medina was in Panama on Sunday, 26 June 2016 at the invitation of Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez to attend the inaugural ceremony for the Panama Canal expansion. “We are celebrating, together with Panama, the opening of the expansion of the Panama Canal,” said Medina.

“As a member of the Central American Integration System (SICA) we trust that this new infrastructure will bring many opportunities for all Central Americans,” he said.

Medina was a special guest of honor as President of the Republic and temporary president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), a regional intergovernmental mechanism for dialogue and political agreement.

While in Panama, President Medina also held a private meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

President Medina traveled with Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta, Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo, Presidency spokesman Roberto Rodriguez Marchena, Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez, Labor Minister Maritza Hernandez, Dominican ambassador Cesar Medina. Also traveling with the President was Banco Popular Dominicano president Manuel Grullon, Grupo Estrella president Manuel Estrella, and businessman Micalo Bermudez.

President Medina returned to the Dominican Republic later the same day.
