DR has 4th highest value-added tax in region

The Dominican Republic has the highest value-added tax (IVA) in Latin America. The comparable ITBIS tax in the Dominican Republic at 18% is only lower than the 22% in Uruguay, 21% in Argentina and 19% in Chile. Recently tax expert Francisco Canahuate has been advocating the government reduce the tax to foster more people paying taxes. The Regional Center for Sustainable Economic Strategies (CREES) is proposing a 10% tax and the expanding of the taxable base to more activities.
