Silver anniversary for Cardinal

The Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Monsignor Nicolas de Jesus Cardenal Lopez Rodriguez, has completed 25 years at the head of the Dominican Catholic Church. Monsignor Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez will be 80 years old on 31 October 2016. He was appointed by the late Pope John Paul in 1991.

In recent months it is known that he has delegated much of his work to close collaborators, the assistant bishops for the Diocese of Santo Domingo, 55-year old Victor Masalles and 78-year old Amancio Escapa.

Local media have speculated his replacement for both the post of cardinal as well as that of Archbishop for Santo Domingo will soon be known. The cardinal resigned in 2011 as required when he turned 75. Pope Francis has yet to announce his replacement.

El Dia speculates the leading candidates for the post are bishops Victor Masalles (Santo Domingo), 64-year old Francisco Ozoria (San Pedro de Macoris), 68-year old Freddy Breton (Santiago), 57-year old Julio Cesar Corniel (Puerto Plata), and 66-year old Diomedes Espinal (Mao-Montecristi).
