Street stalls dismantled in Santiago

The Ministry of Environment has taken down more than 800 booths and stalls in the main streets and avenues of the city of Santiago. Mario Tejeda, regional director of the Ministry of Environment in Santiago made the announcement and said the public roads clean-up operation would continue over the coming days.

He said the work has been requested by civil organizations including the Association for Provincial Development (APEDI). He explained that most of the constructions taken down are illegal while some had receipts to show they paid weekly for the right. Nevertheless, he said there were no city government stamps on any of the receipts that were presented as proof of payment.

He said those who alleged to have rights to the booths and stalls could regularize their situation once the new city government started in August 2016.

Tejeda called for new efforts to reduce contamination in the Yaque del Norte River and said this would depend on the participation of all sectors in Santiago.
