Court of Appeals upholds 30 years sentence in the Jordi Veras case

The Court of Appeals of Santiago confirmed sentences of 30, 20 and 10 years for those accused in the attempted murder of lawyer and communicator, Jordi Veras. In the assault, Veras lost sight in one eye.

The presiding judge, Javiela Garcia, confirmed the 30 year sentence handed down to Candy Caminero for the murder, Adriano Rafael Roman was sentenced to 20 years for being the intellectual author of the crime. Twenty year sentences were also handed down to Engels Carela Castro, Roberto Zarzuela and Arturo Jose Ferrera del Castillo. For his part in the crime, Franklin Reynoso was sentenced to 10 years.

The Appeals Court nevertheless reduced the monetary penalty from RD$100 million to RD$25 million.

Lawyer Jordi Veras said it is almost certain that Adriano Roman and others defendants will appeal their cases to the Supreme Court of Justice.

The group was sentenced on 17 June 2014, by judges of the First Collegiate Court of Santiago for the assault with a deadly weapon against Jordi Veras. The crime was committed on 2 June 2010, when Mr. Veras was arriving to TV channel 25 where he worked.
