The Dominican Professional Baseball Winter League has been penalized for deceptive advertising by the Pro Consumidor, the consumer advocacy state department. ProConsumidor ordered Lidom and the Confederation of Professional Baseball of the Caribbean to pay a fine equal to 60 minimum wages for violations incurred during the staging of the Homerun Derby of the Caribbean Series.
In February 2016, the executive director of ProConsumidor, Anina del Castillo, said that citizens had the right to accurate, complete, timely, sufficient and verifiable information regarding the promotion of the event. Del Castillo said that the promotional materials were misleading because none of the star ballplayers that were highlighted in the derby advertisement participated in the event.
Several baseball fans said they had purchased tickets to the Caribbean Series expecting to see the star ball players participating in the event and accused the organizers of deceptive advertising.
