President Medina calls for reforestation on border with Haiti

President Danilo Medina made a surprise visit to Hondo Valle in Elias Pina province on the border with Haiti and emphasized the need for a concerted effort to reforest the region.

The President named a committee to draft the reforestation plan. The committee includes Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez; the director of the Dominican Agrarian Institute, Emilio Toribio; the director of the Agriculture Bank, Carlos Segura Foster; Senator Adriano Sanchez, the provincial governor and a member of the Agriculture Cooperative, Love for Life and the Association of managers of Hondo Valle.

The President proposed that the committee look into the feasibility to plant avocado and other fruit trees as well as coffee in the region. Medina emphasized the need to conduct a study to see if it was environmentally sound to grow such dual use trees in the area.

The President was accompanied on the trip by the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta; Public Works Minister, Gonzalo Castillo; Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez, and others.
