On Monday, 4 July 2016, Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro acknowledged that although the “informal Haitian regime” hinders the formal dialogue with the Dominican Republic, relations between the two nations are stable. As a case in point, the two countries are meeting on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 July 2016, in Santo Domingo, for the 5th meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (CCC) of the Bi-national Cooperation Program along with representatives of the European Union, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Haitian and Dominican technical team, as reported in Haiti Libre.
The meetings are to review the reports of the past six months, define prospects for the next six months and continue to support the progress of project study.
In Haiti, the 120 days of the provisional presidency of Jocelerme Privert have concluded without new elections being called.
As reported in Haiti Libre, Navarro observed that the Haitian Parliament had not yet decided to ratify or to determine a process of political change in Haiti, but the Dominican Republic has continued to have informal technical meetings on migration. “We do not have official political counterpart in Haiti with which to dialogue, however we are grateful to the Haitian government for maintaining the administrative and technical coordination.”
Navarro said although the teams are meeting, it should be noted that this is only an interim project until the Haitian government is stabilized, noting that any decisions coming out of the meeting cannot be formally recognized.
