Haitians protest over delays in Haiti issuing passports

Dozens of Haitians have been demonstrating in front of the Haitian Embassy in Santo Domingo, demanding that the embassy deliver their passports that were requested two up to years ago and that have still not been issued. When the applications by the undocumented Haitian nationals, they were told the passports would be issued in two months.

The Haitian protestors waived placards and receipts for passports. Although the exact number of Haitian citizens who have not received their passports is not known, Sonia Richard, promoter of labor rights at the Association of Haitian Workers (ATHASOL) and fellow ATHASOL member, Claudier Pierre, said that 26 different Haitian organizations represented thousands of Haitians of which only a veritable handful of the applicants had received their passports.
