New developments in the San Pedro drug haul

The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) and the Public Prosecution Service carried out several raids yesterday, Tuesday, 5 July 2016, in San Pedro de Macoris and surrounding areas following the confiscation of 919 packages of cocaine in Caleton beach in San Pedro.

So far it is known that the leader of the network was Julio de los Santos Bautista (Julito Kilo), who was captured along with two other Dominicans, Cristian Marte Rosario and Robert Victor Munoz Felix and two Colombians, Omar Atencio Vargas and Erlys Sierra Bonilla.

DNCD spokesman, Dario Medrano said that there had been no new drug finds, nor more people arrested ? but they were still looking for the two members of the gang who escaped during the initial operation.

The anti-drug authorities believe that the Colombian Omar Atencio Vargas is the brother or close relative of Jose Dario Atencio Vargas, also from Colombia, who is known to be a ring leader responsible for the 1,300 kilos of cocaine that entered the country in Paya, Bani on 4 August 2008. In the Paya case, some 22 officials were sentenced to prison terms of 10 -30 years for their involvement in both the drug deal and the massacre of seven carried that occurred in Paya. It is now thought that this latest find could be part of the same criminal network.
