Interior and Police Minister Jose Ramon Fadul has reminded residents that beginning on 17 June 2016, the residence permissions given to those foreigners who did not have current passports have begun to expire.
This situation has prompted concern for many foreign residents in the country, especially members of the Haitian population that make up the largest group of migrants.
Fadul said that the Migration Office was working on a proposal to see what can be done in the cases in which the foreigners whose residency permissions have expired this month. Any proposal has to be approved by the Ministry of Interior and Police, although the final approval would be made by President Danilo Medina.
According to data at the Ministry of Interior and Police, there are around 143,000 foreigners whose residency permissions will expire between 17 July and December 2016.
The Haitian nationals need documentation from Haiti in order to be issued permanent residence permits. During the implementation of the National Status Legalization Plan (PNRE) the Dominican government extended the term for Haitian nationals to prevent identity documents to issue the permanent residence cards given the delays in the Haitian government in issuing the documents. This is the term that is now expiring.
