The mayor of Santo Domingo North, Francisco Fernandez announced at a press conference on 5 July 2016 that he is ending the legal process to contest the election results, thus recognizing the victory of PLD candidate Rene Polanco.
Fernandez said that he has made his decision so that peace and stability would be guaranteed in the municipality. He stressed that his decision to drop his legal appeal was not based on any political agreement or a promise of an economic incentive. He called for Polanco to announce the members of his transition committee to prepare for the handing over of power on 16 August.
Fernandez had sought to be re-elected in the 15 May 2016 general election.
