According to the National Police, during the first three months of this year, there were 13 femicides, where women were killed by their spouses or former spouses. This compares to 29 during the same time period in 2016.
The latest femicide took place in San Francisco de Macorís, on 26 April 2017, when 36-year old José Manuel Moya Marte killed his partner, Maria del Carmen Martinez Geronimo, aged 37, stabbing her to death following an argument.
The 2017 femicides began on 1 January when a man killed his wife by clubbing her to death with sticks and then committed suicide in Hato Mayor.
