DR qualifies for U17 Basketball World Cup 2018

The Dominican U-16 men’s basketball team came in 5th place in the U-16 Americas Championship, winning one of four slots available to represent the region in the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2018. Argentina had already pre-qualified as host of the event in Formosa, Argentina.

The Dominican team defeated Mexico 71-51 on Sunday, 18 June 2017 in the tournament. The winners of the Americas Cup were United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Argentina was 4th, Dominican Republic 5th and Mexico 6th. Other participants were Paraguay and Venezuela. The tournament took place 14-18 June 2017.

Diario Libre highlighted this is only the fourth time in Dominican history that a Dominican team qualifies for a world cup. The qualification is being compared to other highs of Dominican basketball — playing at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in 2015 for the first time since 1983 and participating in the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2014 for the first time since 1978.
