President Danilo Medina was in Pedernales on Wednesday, 12 July 2017 for the inaugural of the Mencía Micro Hydroelectric. The system will benefit more than 315 families that live in the communities of La Altagracia and Aguas Negra.
The work was carried out by the Unidad de Electrificación Rural y Suburbana (UERS) at a cost of RD$40 million. It uses the waters of the Río Mulito and is designed to generate power 24/7.
