Citrus fruits under threat

The head investigator at the Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Investigations (IDIAF), Luis Matos, says that the “Huanglongbing” (HLB) disease has decimated 50% of the local citrus fruit production. The disease has been in the country since 2008. The HLB is transmitted between from plant to plant by a mosquito. Because of HLB, the country has to import citrus fruits to meet domestic demand. The disease is difficult to control and IDIAF researchers are trying to determine how the HLB is produced and how to stop it from spreading.
