On Sunday night, 8 August 2017, three people died and more than 10 were injured in an accident involving a truck and a SUV on the Hato Mayor-Sabana de la Mar road in the east of the country.
Those who died were identified as 25-year old Esteverson Fenix, and Carlos Yan and Tiwí Pierret, Haitian footballers. Other footballers injured include Carlos José, Haner Gil, 23 and Leo Ciprián. The identities of the other injured people are not known. They had been playing in a game in the community of Mango Limpio, some 21 kilometers from Hato Mayor.
The Land Cruiser involved in the accident was being driven by a man known as “Samson El Brujo”, who was also injured.
The victims were first taken to the Leopoldo Martinez Hospital in Hato Mayor and some were then transferred to the Doctor Antonio Musa Hospital in San Pedro de Macorís.
The government reported around 12 vehicle accidents over the weekend.
