The Dominican Civil Aviation Board has given Russian charter airline Azur Air Limited the green light to operate the Moscow-La Romana flight route. The airline has also requested permission to fly from Yekaterinburg to Punta Cana from Kolstovo International Airport. This would be the first time the Dominican Republic is connected directly with Yekaterinburg, the fourth largest Russian city after Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. Yekaterinburg is located in mid-west Russia.
AzurAir has yet to announce when the flights would start.
The Dominican Civil Aviation Board also approved new flight routes for the Russian airline LLC Nordwind from Moscow to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.
Luis Ernesto Camilo, president of the JAC, said these new flights are evidence that the Russian market continues to grow and is bringing new destinations and new routes to the country.
Camilo said that at the close of June 2017, travel to and from Russia was at 231,288 passengers, 163,415 more than for the same period in 2016. He said in 2014 and 2015, travel from Russia was affected when economic penalties caused the suspension of operations of several charter airlines. Russian airlines selling charters are AzurAir, Rossiya, Nord Wind and Pegas Fly.
