If you can’t beat them join them, seems to be the new strategy to stimulate an increase in Jamaican tourist arrivals in coming years. Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, or the Spanish Caribbean, have been showing growth numbers in tourism in the Caribbean. Now, English-speaking Jamaica wants to convince people to go on multi-destination vacations, Europe-style, to experience the rich cultural diversity of the region.
Jamaica is signing agreements to boost marketing activity and encourage airlines to offer multi-stop routes within the region, says Jamaica Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett. He says this is particularly appealing to tourists that have three or four weeks of vacation time.
Along these lines, recently Air China expressed interest in flying to the Dominican Republic bringing Chinese tourists. Air China already has direct flights from Havana to Beijing. Jamaica has been receiving Chinese investment for infrastructure and could participate in multi-destination deal with this Asian airline.
The Dominican Republic is the regional leader in air-arrivals to a single country in the Caribbean.
