It can be done in a day trip from Santo Domingo. Visit the Salto Grande waterfall with its water falling from a height of 35 meters. Salto Grande is the largest of four waterfalls from the 12-km Rio Grande waterfall. The swimming holes are ideal for bathing and relaxing after a moderately challenging hike. The waterfalls are part of the Parque Nacional Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó, a dry forest protected area. The Rio Grande River feeds the aqueduct of the Las Charcas municipal district.
The Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó National Park has over 8 kms of hiking trails, including 4.7 kms bordering the Rio Grande.
