A US citizen, Leonel Rodríguez, was arrested on 2 October 2017, when attempting to export 29 packages of cocaine (2.36 kilos) in double-bottom suitcases through Puerto Plata International Airport. She was arrested by the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) agents and sent to judiciary for prosecution. The drugs were detected when a security agent noticed the image of suspicious packages shown by the scanner x-ray. The first suitcase had 12 packages, a second had 15 packages.
