Punta Cana tops tourism survey in the region

According to the Annual Index of Global Destination Cities Index for 2016 carried out by Mastercard, Punta Cana is the leading Latin American and Caribbean destination for leisure vacations, followed by San Jose, Costa Rica (86.3%), Buenos Aires (93.7%, Mexico City (83%), Rio de Janeiro (77.8%) and Lima (76%).

In total overnight visitors and overall tourist spending for 2016, Punta Cana leads with US$2.95 billion spent by 2.7 million overnight international visitors. Next is Mexico City with US$2.27 billion spent by 3 million overnight visitors. Buenos Aires was third in 2016 with US$1.69 billion spent by 2 million visitors.

The global tourist survey reports that the Punta Cana beach destination has grown in overnight visitors from 2.03 million overnight international visitors in 2012 to 2.73 million in 2016. Mastercard places Punta Cana as third in fastest growing destination cities by international overnight visitors (2009 to 2016). Lima’s compound annual growth rate was 9.9%, compared to 9.6% for Bogotá’ and 7.3% for Punta Cana.

The top feeder cities for Punta Cana were Toronto and Montreal in Canada, and Atlanta, New York and Miami in the USA.
