Four more streets will become pedestrian walks as part of the mobility plan for the Colonial City of Santo Domingo prepared in coordination with the National Ground Transit Institute (Intrant).
Maribel Villalona, responsible since 2013 for the renewal works in the Colonial City on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, said the streets would be the Arzobispo Meriño, Isabel la Católica in the north-south direction and the Mercedes and Billini in the east-west direction. In the Colonial City, already the Calle El Conde has been pedestrian in its 1 km extension from east to west for some 20 years now. In a first phase the ban on vehicular traffic on the abovementioned streets will take place on specific days and schedules.
Also contemplated to improve access and mobility in the Colonial City is the changing of the direction of vehicle traffic on Mella Avenue, that is north of the Colonial City. Likewise, construction of a parking space under the Plaza España and incorporation of a system of electrical cars to move residents and visitors are contemplated.
