Santiago chosen for FIBA qualifier

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifier will be played at the Gran Arena del Cibao Dr. Oscar Gobaira in Santiago de los Caballeros. The facility was deemed in better conditions than the Palacio de los Deportes arena in Santo Domingo. The event is a qualifier for the FIBA Basketball World Cup China 2019.

The FIBA qualifiers that start in November 2017 are set to take place in six countries and will feature the world’s top national teams playing 1,200 games in front of millions of fans all around the globe.

During the first phase of 16 Americas teams, the Dominican Republic will play the Bahamas, Canada and the US Virgin Islands as part of Group D. The first game will be against the US Virgin Islands on Friday, 24 November 2017 at 8pm at the Gran Arena del Cibao. Next, on Monday, 27 November, the DR will play Canada, also in Santiago. In a second phase, the DR will play the Bahamas on Thursday, 22 February 2018 and the US Virgin Islands on 25 February 2018. The DR vs Canada game is scheduled for 29 June 2018.

The other groups are: Group A (Argentina, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay), Group B (Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela), Group C (Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States).

The top three teams in the pool following the first phase move onto a second phase of competition against three new FIBA Americas opponents.
