
Late on Monday, 30 October 2017, too late to make most newspapers, Ruben Lulo Gitte, the former mayor of Moca and lifelong member of the PRD as well as captain of the national volleyball team passed away. He was 83.
Lulo Gitte is described as a true son of the Lebanese-Palestinian immigration in the late 19th century, the third child of Emilio Lulo and Gajime Gitte. He graduated from law school at the University of Santo Domingo in 1956. He is survived by three children: Orquidia, Ruben and Thelvia Fajime.
In the early 1960s Lulo Gitte carried arms to the uprising against Dictator Trujillo led by Manolo Tavarez in the Central Mountains.
He was the mayor of Moca between 1978 and 1982 and once again from 1994 until 2006 always as a member of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).
As an outstanding athlete, Lulo Gitte was the captain of the national volleyball team and played in several international tournaments. He was also on the organizing committee for the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santiago.
