The Ministry of Industry & Commerce (MICM) has ordered those companies that sell fuel to immediately renew their licenses and operation permits. The Ministry says that 80% of the gas stations have one or more licenses expired.
Representatives from the Ministry reported that of 2,668 gas stations nationwide, 2,134 are operating with expired licenses. Of these 1,304 serve gas and diesel stations, and 1,364 serve LPG.
Manual Jimenez, spokesman for the Ministry of Industry & Commerce, said there is no actual timescale for renewing the licenses but that this should happen in a prudent period of time.
The gas stations need to obtain permits from three different institutions — the Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of the Environment, and the MICM. The licenses need to be renewed annually.
