Miguel Fluxa, chief executive officer of Grupo Iberostar of Spain, in an interview with Arecoa, announced the construction of 3,000 more hotel rooms in two hotels in the Colonial City and Bavaro beach area of Punta Cana. Iberostar operates the Iberostar Punta Cana, Iberostar Bávaro Hotel Punta Cana and the Iberostar Bávaro Suites in Arena Gorda, Punta Cana.

Iberostar will be operating the old Hotel Las Mercedes with its New Orleans-style French balconies on Calle Las Mercedes in the Colonial City, as reported by Infoturdominicano. The 100-room deluxe hotel will be the first city hotel of the Spanish chain that has several resorts in Punta Cana. As reported, the city hotel will have an area of 2,997 square meters.

In the interview with Arecoa, Fluxa highlighted the positive working relationship between public and private sector in the Dominican Republic. He praised the government investments in infrastructure that have shortened the distances between the destinations. “I’m sure most people are not aware of the scope of what this country has done in the past 25 years, in terms of development and tourism infrastructure and services” Fluxa told Arecoa. “I remember the difficulties there were for everything we had to import everything, and today we are now in a first rate tourism level,” he said.

“We thank the Dominican people for your efforts to spur the tourism revolution in your country. There are very few tourism destinations such as the Dominican Republic. Investors are everyday more assured of their investment – but at the start, as you may recall, it was an adventure,” he recalled. He highlighted that in the 80s when they built their first hotel in Punta Cana, it was a half-day trip to get to the capital city. Today the trip can be made in less than three hours.
