Planned Venezuelan talks suspended

Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas announced on Thursday, 18 January 2018, the suspension of the Venezuelan government and opposition dialogue mediated by President Danilo Medina and Spanish former president Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. The meetings had been scheduled to resume on 18 January in Santo Domingo. There is no new date set.

The suspension follows the recent death of rebel helicopter pilot Oscar Perez in Venezuela.

Speaking in Santo Domingo on 18 January, spokesman for the Venezuelan government Jorge Rodríguez said that the terrorist cell headed by former police inspector Oscar Perez had plans to murder President Nicolas Maduro, the Minister of Defense Vladimir Padrino Lopez and the Vice President Tareck El Aissami, attorney general Tareck William Saab, among others.
