Minister of Economy favors more taxes, not a word on less wasteful spending

The Minister of Economy, Isidoro Santana, expressed concern at the debt level and stressed the government needs to reduce its fiscal deficit. “I do not think anyone in their right mind can expect the government to lower its level of spending, because the Dominican Republic has one of the lowest levels of public spending in the world in relation to gross domestic product (GDP),” Santana said.

The solution to the debt problem, in his opinion, is to try to find ways to increase tax revenues. He said the government is making the effort to increase its tax revenues.
