On 27 February 2018, when accessing Google, Dominican Internet users were greeted with a doodle celebrating the 174th Independence Day. The doodle seemed to be inspired by the arches of the Plaza de la Bandera. Independence Day in the Dominican Republic marked the reinstating of the nation in 1844 after 22 years of Haitian domination. In 1821, the country had declared independence from Spain.
