Former President Leonel Fernández has been appointed head of the mission of visiting foreigner dignitaries to observe the federal and local elections to be held in Mexico on 1 July 2018. The appointment was communicated to Fernandez by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, who delivered a letter sent by the Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO).

The letter said that DECO would give Fernandez all of the support he needed to organize the mission as well as any logistical or organizational aspects needed. This is the fourth time that the former President of the Dominican state has been invited by the international community to participate as head of an electoral observation mission in a Latin American company. The first time was Venezuela, followed by Bolivia, Ecuador and now Mexico.
