Monte Plata is betting on the RD$300 million Cristo de los Milagros sanctuary to lure tourists from Punta Cana resorts to visit the ecotouristic and cultural attractions in the central province. The tourists would connect from Punta Cana through Higuey and Hato Mayor.
President Danilo Medina, as part of his recent increase in backing to the Roman Catholic Church, has made available funds for the completion of the pilgrimage site, as reported in Diario Libre. The sanctuary would have capacity for 1,800 persons.
The rector of the sanctuary, Faustino Plasencia Rodriguez told Diario Libre reporters he is pleased with the pace of construction that if maintained would mean the sanctuary would be finished by summer this year. The Presidency has set a 28 December 2018 inaugural date.
The area for many years has been a popular retreat and summer camp site. It has several natural attractions, including the Salto Alto, Saltos de Sabana waterfalls. There are already several eco touristic lodgings in the area.
