Maribel Villalona, general coordinator for improvements in the historic center of Santo Domingo, the Colonial City, announced that an estimated 682,000 visitors toured the Colonial City in 2017. Speaking during the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE), Villalona says that over the period 2010 to 2017 visits to the Colonial City have increased 64%.
Villalona highlighted that the number of businesses in the Colonial City has almost doubled. Villalona said around 500 new businesses have opened since the government began the US$31.5 million renovation of the historic area.
“The tourists visiting the Colonial City today will find a historic city full of life, with safe public spaces accessible complemented by an innovative video surveillance system, a renewed urban lighting system and around 4 kilometers of streets ideal for photographers who want to capture the vibrant, 500 year history of Santo Domingo,” said Villalona.
