Diabetes on the rise, binge drinking partially to blame

According to a study carried out by the National Diabetes Institute (INDEN) and the Ibero Americano University (UNIBE), 13% of Dominicans are diabetic and 58% of those diabetics also have hypertension.
The study’s researchers sampled 10,500 people in the 31 provinces in the country. Of the 13% who had diabetes, 2.35 % did not know they had suffered from the disease. Of the sample, 9.3% were pre-diabetic.

The results of the study were presented by the director of INDEN, Ammar Ibrajim, who recommended the detection and prevention of diabetes and highlighted that the majority of the diabetics made their disease worse by their behavior, type of food and alcohol consumption.
