Queen Letizia of Spain visits

On Sunday, 20 May 2018, under strict security, Queen Letizia of Spain arrived for a two-day working trip. During her visit to the Americas, she will also be visiting Haiti. In both countries she will visit projects being carried out by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (Aecid). The Queen was received at the airport by Foreign Relations Minister Miguel Vargas, Spanish ambassador in the country Alejandro Abellán Garcia.

She is traveling with a large delegation, headed up by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation for Ibero-American and the Caribbean, Fernando Garcia Casas.

The Spanish authorities would not allow the press near the Queen so that no photographs, videos or interviews were allowed. The press reported the Queen and entourage were then taken in a heavily armed motorcade to Santo Domingo. On Monday, 21 May she went to Monte Plata to the Nueva Esperanza neighborhood to visit a rural drinking water project developed by Aecid. In the afternoon, she met with First Lady Cándida Montilla with whom she visited the Integrated Center for Care of Disabilities (CAID).

Later in the afternoon, she met with President Danilo Medina and Vice President Margarita Cedeño and attended a luncheon in her honor at the Presidential Palace.

Her itinerary also included a visit to the Centro Cultural de España in Santo Domingo where she met with representatives of the Spanish Technical Cooperation Office and participated in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Spanish cooperation in the country.

On Tuesday, 22 May, the Queen is scheduled to tour an organic banana cooperative in southwestern Azua (Cooprobata). She will also learn about the Plan International project that focuses on programs to reduce teenage pregnancies and early marital cohabitation.

Press coverage of the trip of the Queen was limited, but the Presidency made available photographs and videos on the visit.

Following to returning to Santo Domingo, traveled to Haiti to visit Spanish cooperation projects in that country.
