A fire that was apparently set to burn sugar cane fields to facilitate their cutting has gotten out of control on the road that leads north from San Pedro de Macorís to Hato Mayor. Diario Libre reports that the fire has affected the visibility for those using the road.
As reported in Diario Libre, the fire was not initiated by the owners of the crop. Instead, the burning of the “sweet stick” is attributed to unscrupulous people, who now supposedly “use cats to which they tie strips sprinkled with gasoline, which turn on and let the animal run among the cane fields to spread the fire”.
The communities most affected were Consuelito, Alejandro Bass, Vasca, Chicarrones, among others.
Firefighters of the municipality of Consuelo had to extinguish fires that spread to several points of the road.
