Thursday, 16 August 2018 is an official holiday in the Dominican Republic. Given that it falls on a Thursday, many businesses will allow for staff to take the long weekend off.
The holiday celebrates Restoration Day that marks when independence was returned to the Dominican Republic by Spain. The country had been annexed to Spain by General Pedro Santana on 18 March 1861. He feared Haitians would again occupy the country.
