
Dominican Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas was in Kuwait where he met with high ranking Kuwait government officers. On 16 October 2018, he met with the Minister of Finance of Kuwait Nayef Falah Al-Hajraf. As reported, Vargas and Falah Al-Hajraf discussed a number of important topics, including ways to strengthen economic and trade ties and cooperation between both countries.
During the visit, Vargas also met with the director general of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), Abdulwahab A. Al-Bader, who made available to the Dominican Republic financing and cooperation for projects of infrastructure and other sectors. The KFAED finances infrastructure works (ports, airports, highways), agricultural development initiatives, among others.
In Kuwait, Vargas also visited the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuwait where he was received by the organization’s president, Ali M. Thunaian Al-Ghanin, who highlighted the good relations between the two countries, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Relations. The Dominican minister explained the excellent investment climate that prevails in the Dominican Republic and the advantages it offers to foreign capital, due to trade agreements signed with the United States, the European Union and Central America and the Caribbean.
On Tuesday, 16 October, Vargas also met with Yosef Al Fouzan, an official of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Kuwait, with whom he discussed the relevance of improving air connectivity with the Dominican Republic. In December 2016 the two countries signed an aviation agreement that is in the process of approval by both countries. This will allow a Kuwaiti airline to fly to the Dominican Republic. The meeting was also attended by Luis Ernesto Camilo, director of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC); and Ambassador Hugo Beras.
During his stay in Kuwait, Vargas held a luncheon meeting with Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Sabah, former prime minister of Kuwait, during which they discussed various issues.
The Foreign Ministry delegation that accompanied Vargas was composed of Vargas’ wife, ambassador Angelita García; Ambassador Hugo Guiliani and the president of the JAC. Finally, Vargas also met with executives of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC).
