The construction of Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda was announced on 22 October 2018. The resort marks the start of what the company is calling its first “Exclusive Collection Resort” in the Americas. The new resort concept features four boutique villages. Each of the four boutique villages will present its own unique environment, activities and accommodations. The villages include Archipelago and Emerald Jungle (adults only), Caribbean Paradise and Explorer Cove.
Club Med will be the first resort to open in the beach area between Punta Cana and Samana. The site is about an hour and a half drive north of Punta Cana, and a boat ride away from Samana.
The new Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda will be the chain’s biggest project of its type in the Caribbean in the past 40 years. The Club Med’s Exclusive Collection is a brand for premium resorts designed for travelers seeking the finer elements of the all-inclusive resort brand. Other Exclusive Collection resorts include the Finolhu Villas in the Maldives, the recently opened Cefalù resort in Sicily and the Valmorel Chalets in the French Alps.
Company CEO of Club Med North America and the Caribbean, Xavier Mufraggi said that for years they searched around the Caribbean to find the right property. They decided on Playa Esmeralda, not too far from where Club Med had its start in the Dominican Republic. Club Med was the first resort to open in the Punta Cana area in 1978, back when to get there took around six hours drive from the capital city of Santo Domingo.
“For almost 10 years, our team searched to find the perfect new land in the Caribbean to introduce to our guests. Miches was a natural fit – we found many locals, and even our own employees in Punta Cana, would spend their free days visiting this unspoiled location. We decided to explore this area for ourselves to see what made it so special. Little did we know how remarkable it would be: from its unparalleled beaches and breathtaking sights of whales swimming off the coast of Samaná Bay to the famous peak and swing of Montaña Redonda and the cascading waters of El Limón – Miches had it all.
“We went diving to explore the coral reefs. We spoke to the local fishermen to learn about the area. We found ourselves coming back again and again. After collaborating with the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, and learning of the new road they were building to make Miches easily accessible, we immediately knew that this was the destination we were looking for. Our team got to work immediately.
Now, we are thrilled to bring Miches to the forefront when we open Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda in December 2019, the very first Exclusive Collection resort in the Americas.”
