Special Tennis Olympics to start 11 November at Parque del Este

The Dominican Republic will host the Global Tennis Special Olympics starting 11 November 2018, with the participation of 230 athletes from 30 countries at the courts of the Parque del Este in Santo Domingo Este.

The Dominican Republic will also host the Global Congress of Athletes from 9 to 17 November 2018, at the Santo Domingo Sheraton and the Annual Meeting of the International Board of Director of the Special Olympics at the Jaragua Renaissance. These activities will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics that were founded in 1968 by the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister to the late President John F. Kennedy.

The events are coordinated by the Office of the First Lady Cándida Montilla who received the proposal for the tournament in April 2017 in Panama. The Office of the First Lady presides over the largest special needs organization in the country, the Centro de Atención Integral para la Discapacidad (CAID).

A press conference was held last week with the participation of Sports Minister Danilo Díaz; the president and regional director of the Special Olympics for Latin America, Claudia Echeverry; the technical coordinator of the First Lady Office, Martha Rodríguez and the director of the tournament, Sergio Tobal.
