The government has launched a program to back pineapple production and increase exports. The government sees pineapples as a possible export product to new markets in China, says Agriculture Minister Osmar Benítez.
The backing includes technical assistance, credit, logistics support and investments to build and upgrade packaging facilities.
Benítez said that last year pineapples contributed around US$4.35 million in exports and the amount should increase next year.
Héctor Sánchez, president of pineapple growers association in Cevicos, Sánchez Ramírez province (Apropic), said there were currently around 100,000 tareas (6,500 hectares) of pineapple production in the Dominican Republic.
